Merrittville Speedway: Holiday Doubleheader kicks off Saturday

THOROLD, ON - The first holiday doubleheader of 2010 kicks off Saturday May 22nd when the Seaway Mall presents the season opener for the BRP Can AM Late Model Tour.

With the BRP Can Am Late Models in the spotlight in their only 2010 visit are the Thorold track’s Lucas Oil Weekly Racing Series Divisions – the Original Pizza Logs Sportsman, Hoosier Stocks, J&S Heating and Air Conditioning Modified Lites and the Turn 4 Collision 4 Cylinders.

Race fans will sure get their racing fixes over the Holiday Weekend,” relates (Merrittville GM) Erica Bicknell, “it will be quite a doubleheader with some must see events both nights … the BRP Late Models is a fan favorite each season!”

Former Merrittville Pro Stock Champion Darren Kish would join the growing BRP Can Late Model Tour and in an Invitational Event in 2006 – took the division’s  first checkered flag on Canadian Soil. The 10th visit sees 48 different drivers collecting home track points leading into the series opener.

“We have always enjoyed the racing at Merrittville,” revealed (2009 Merrittville winner) Larry Knowles, “the track is big enough to allow some great racing … the track surface is outstanding – I was lucky to win last year … this series is a tough deal.”

Home track feature winners to date in 2010 include Glenn Whritenhour, Bryce Davis, Jeremy Wonderling, Brian Knowles, Quinn Sutherland and Josh Smith at Woodhull and Black Rock. Throughout the summer – drivers can also collect points at Canandaigua and Little Valley towards the 2010 BRP Can Am Late Model Series Championship.

Father and son racers Dave and Bruce Miller – winners in 2005 at Merrittville are also expected to be pitside in the Series Opener. Also set to debut Saturday Night is the 2010 Isky Cam Father Challenge that offers a $300 bonus to the driver that draws the pole and wins after opting to start at the back of the field.

The Saturday and Monday events will provide a full menu of great racing action.

Merrittville Speedway made a return to the Seaway Mall in March leading up to the 2010 Season and one car on display that drew lots of attention was the BRP Can Am Late Model of former Merrittville Pro Stock star Rick Baker.

Baker is expected to be in the field when the 2009 BRP Can Am Late Model Series opens at Merrittville after a recent non-point event at the Black Rock Speedway that saw rookie Greg Galligan in Victory Lane when all is said and done - a new river that calls the Woodhull (NY) Speedway home.
