SCOOP: Mystery Chevrolet Small Crossover / MPV Spotted in Europe, What is it?

We’re not quite sure what to make of this new Chevrolet prototype that was caught by our scoop photographers on European roads. The test vehicle appears to be a small or compact MPV in a taller, SUV-esque design with short overhangs and an upright fascia reminiscent of the latest Chevy models. Our man with the long-lens told us that the camouflaged prototype was clearly smaller than the Orlando people mover that’s offered in Europe.

It could be that Chevrolet is working on a new small crossover model based on an extended version of General Motors’ Gamma II platform. The same architecture underpins the new Chevy Spark and Aveo / Sonic and will also form the base for the future Opel Corsa and its SUV sibling that is currently under development.

More Screaming Passengers from the 2011 Red Bull Car Drift Event in Lebanon

We don’t know about you, but we certainly enjoyed watching the video of a male passenger freaking out during a ride around a drift course, so we decided to do a little bit of online research to find out what it was all about. We discovered that the joy ride was part of the Red Bull Car Park Drift 2011 event and it took place in Lebanon.

The man behind the steering wheel of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI is 34-year-old Abdo Feghali from Lebanon. He is a professional rally driver who also participates in drift contests and events such as the one organized by Red Bull.

If you liked the first video we showed you, then follow the jump to watch the reactions of the same male passenger, this time sitting at the back between two women (oddly enough no one was wearing seat belts…), as well as some new footage of other people that took a ride including the beautiful lady you see pictured above.

Honda Patents New 2012 Civic Sedan and Coupe Designs in Europe

A peek through the European patent office files revealed images of Honda’s freshly launched in North America, 2012 Civic in both four-door sedan and two-door coupe guise. Given that the European market will get its own, bespoke version of the Civic, chances are that Honda simply wanted to cover its back like most of the competition just in case another automaker (we are looking towards you China) got any crazy ideas.

However, it is possible that Honda will offer the four-door saloon model in certain European countries to compete against the Volkswagen Jetta. With the exception of one version of the Civic sedan seen in this set of images and which features slightly modified taillights with additional strips that extend towards the license plate holder, there are no other differences compared to the North American Civic.

Big Brother is Watching, Well, All of us: U.S. DoT Seeks to Make Event Data Recorders Mandatory

Australian inventor and all-round genius Dr David Warren is widely considered to be the father of the “black box” Flight Data Recorder (FDR). His invention helped make flying safer by giving investigators valuable insights into the mechanical goings-on of a crashed aircraft. What may surprise you is that for the last twenty years similar devices have been installed in our cars.

Event Data Recorders (EDRs) are the automotive equivalent of an aircraft’s FDR. These devices record acceleration and deceleration forces, engine RPM, temperature, oil pressure and a host of other things. After a crash, the information can be recovered and studied, aiding investigators.

VW Releases Golf GTI Edition 35 Specs and Price, Says it gets a Detuned Version of the Golf R’s Engine [with Video]

Developed to celebrate 35 years since the launch of the original Volkswagen Golf GTI in 1976, the GTI Edition 35 will make its premiere at the Worthersee Tour (June 1-4) in Austria. A 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine that develops 235-horsepower and 300 Nm of torque (221 lb-ft), 25HP and 20 Nm more than the standard GTI, powers the limited edition hot-hatch.

However, Volkswagen says the engine is not an upgraded version of the standard GTI's unit but a detuned version of the AWD Golf R's four-pot, adapted for a FWD setup. With 25 more horsepower than the standard GTI and a power-to-weight ratio of 6 kg/hp, the Golf GTI Edition 35 reaches a top speed of 247 km/h (153 mph) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.6 seconds (gains of 7 km/h and 0.3 seconds respectively).

BEEDE AND EVERSLEY PODIUM AT LIME ROCK PARK

(Lakeville, CT) -- After an unexpected but not unwelcome win in the last Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge event at Virginia International Raceway, Compass360 Racing (C360R) brought together one of their strongest line-ups of the season in the hopes of further podium results at Lime Rock Park.

As they had earlier in the year at Homestead, the team signed veteran Honda racer and multiple-time Grand-Am champion Bob Beede, this time to co-drive with Ryan Eversley in the #75 Children's Tumor Foundation Honda Civic Si. "After our win at VIR, we brought Bob in to try and help Ryan close the points gap to the leaders," explained Team Principal Karl Thomson. "Lime Rock is Beede's home track, and local knowledge can often make a big difference here."

Although still struggling with a series-mandated restrictor fitted to the Hondas at the beginning of this season, the team felt they could use smart strategic calls as they had in VIR to make up some of the performance deficits to the other front-runners. David Thilenius and Zach Lutz would once again share their #74 JC Concrete Honda, while John Kuitwaard (who also counts Lime Rock as his home track) would join Andrew Novich in the #77 Dr. Kimberly Henry / Speed Secrets Civic.

"I said before Virginia that we are out to win races," said Technical Director Ray Lee. "We're back in the championship hunt but after some tough races to start the year, we have to focus on wins and podiums."

Qualifying once again was proof positive that the Grand-Am restrictor is doing its job too well, with Beede the top team car qualifying 13th, Thilenius (who rarely qualified outside of the top ten last year) in 20th and Kuitwaard in 21st of the thirty-three Street Tuner entries. Interestingly, first to 32nd place were separated by just two seconds, demonstrating just how competitive the Continental Tire series is.

The race on Saturday was under beautiful clear sunny skies, and the 33-strong field of Street Tuner cars offered the huge spectator turn-out an awesome show as the opening act of the Lime Rock Memorial Day weekend. Despite their qualifying positions, all three starting drivers made solid gains and moved through the field, with all three C360R cars being in close proximity after lap ten, with the team running order being Thilenius, Beede and Kuitwaard.

The race progressed with a couple of yellow flag periods to tighten the field, the team's starting pilots turned over their cars to their co-drivers. Andrew Novich was in a solid fourth position, ahead of team-mates Zach Lutz and Ryan Eversley, albeit on slightly older tires and on an aggressive fuel strategy. There was a lot of action during the next hour and with fifteen minutes to go, Eversley was in fifth position, Lutz tenth and Novich in twelfth when an huge incident between the top two cars, moving all three of the C360R cars into the top ten.

With eight laps to go and the finish in sight, #77's fuel pump expired, and Novich carefully pulled the car to a safe location on track. "The crew made a great call to leave me out and hope for enough yellow flags to extend our fuel window," noted Novich. "It would have worked perfectly, and so it's really tough to finish this way when we were so close." He and Kuitwaard were scored 24th.

This left Eversley, now in third, and Lutz, in eighth, to bring home their cars with just a few laps to go, which they did with typical aplomb. "What an amazing finish," enthused Eversley. "You hate to benefit at the misfortune of others, and I'm glad Andrew (Carbonell) and Owen (Trinkler) are okay after that wreck. But two podiums in a row is great for the team, so we'll take it."

Similarly, Lutz was thrilled with the best result so far this season for the #74 of he and Thilenius. "It's nice to be back in the top ten," joked Lutz. "Hopefully we can have it become a regular thing for the rest of the year."

The team continued its rewarding partnership with the Children's Tumor Foundation, welcoming a dozen children suffering from Neurofibromatosis (NF), their families and top local fundraisers to Lime Rock Park. The kids were a part of the loud crowd during the race and the podium celebrations, cheering their heroes Ryan and Bob as they accepted their trophies. Fans are encouraged to donate at http://racing4research.org.

The team has a brief few days at its Toronto, Canada base before loading up the Hondas for the next event, at Watkins Glen, New York, on June 3rd, where the Continental Tire race will start at 6:00pm and race into the darkness.

Audi Design Student Creates the Trimaran Hybrid Yacht

Audi's concept design studio in Munich came up with an interesting proposition for a luxury yacht that would wear the four-ring logo. The Trimaran is the project work of Pforzheim Technical College student Stefanie Behringer, who explains the idea behind the study:

“The Audi Trimaran is a new concept which integrates two jet skis in a motorboat. The hull architecture is based on a trimaran, consisting of a main center hull supported by two smaller outrigger hulls. Two jet skis are stored inside pods in the outriggers. The main boat is powered by two lightweight and efficient Audi TDI diesel engines, whereas the jet skis are electrically-driven,” said Behringer.

Simply Epic: Pro Drifter Brings Out the Female Side of Male Passenger

In life, there are moments you wish you could bottle up and savor forever but there are also moments you wish never happened. A few seconds into the follow video are more than enough to find out which of two statements mentioned above are true for the man sitting in the passenger seat.

The poster of the video claims that the “Middle East man” was all shook up by a “professional drifter after he claimed to be a pro drifter too”. Understandably, there’s no way of being sure about the claim if we don’t understand a word they’re saying, so if you any of you guys or girls speak the language, we would be much obliged if you let us know what’s going on in the comments section below.

Take that Goodwood: Vilner’s Mini Cooper S Inspired by Bentley

The BMW Group’s decision to launch a new posh version of the Mini hatch called “Mini Inspired by Goodwood” motivated Bulgarian design studio Vilner to develop its own luxed-up variant of the British supermini. However, while the Goodwood model received the Rolls Royce touch, Vilner’s proposal tries to emulate a Bentley – at least in the interior.

Even though Vilner has baptized the car “The Italian Job” as homage to the famous movie, for obvious reasons, a more appropriate name would have been “Mini Inspired by Crewe”. The Bulgarian company has dressed the Mini hatchback’s interior with fine materials such as brown Nappa leather and Alcantara, with parts of the seats, door panels, dashboard and roof lining featuring a diamond shape theme. In addition, the doors have gained elements of black leather while the original plastic was re-sprayed in a sparkling gray finish.

Mohawk International Raceway - THOMPSON SWEEPS WHILE RAABE, HOOGWERF, EVOY, BOUVIER AND WHITE ALL CLAIM MOHAWK CHECKERS

AKWESASNE, NY – May 31, 2011 - Heavy rains forced the May 20th feature events to be postponed at Mohawk International Raceway, then after mother nature decided to spoil the Memorial Day weekend festivities, MIR officials decided to fight back and throw all the racing on an absolutely beautiful Memorial Day Monday. With 7 features on the card lots of excitement was in store for the evening.

First up was the DIRTcar Pro Stock feature from May 20th. Ricky Thompson and Stephane Lebrun started on the front row with Thompson grabbing the early advantage and leading the opening 6 laps. It didn’t take long for veteran Jody Swamp to move from 7th to grab the top spot on lap 7. Only 2 caution flags slowed the 20 lap event which allowed Thompson regain the lead by lap 12 and held it the rest of the way over Swamp, Roch Aubin, Dave Bissonette and Dion Oakes.

In the Bandit division Derek Colbert and Bennett White made up the front row with Colbert taking the early lead. It didn’t take long for former Enduro division champion Owen White to make his presence known and grab the lead just past the halfway point of the 12 lap event. With the race going green to checkered Owen White opened up a big advantage on the field and grabbed the win over Colbert, Ernie Cree, Bennett White and Kyle Bouvier.

The DIRTCar Sportsman division concluded the May 20th portion of the program. Brad Winters and Dylan Evoy paced the field to the green flag with Winters taking the top spot. It didn’t take long for Evoy to wrestle the lead away from Winters on lap 3 bringing Dillon Sallows, Jenna David, Josh Jock and Tom Benedict along with him. Just then Winters slowed on the front stretch bringing out the yellow. A scary moment happened on lap 7 as Tom Benedict flipped in turn 4 after contact with the infield tire. Benedict was uninjured and was able to return to action later on in the evening. On the restart Evoy continued his strong run as Sheldon Hoogwerf started to move forward. By lap 13 Hoogwerf started to close on Evoy for the lead when Mike White slowed to a stop in turn 3. Evoy continued his dominance of the field until his left rear tire went flat on lap 17 sending him pit side. With Evoy out Sheldon Hoogwerf sailed to his 2nd career MIR DIRTCar Sportsman win over Dillon Sallows, Tom Conklin, Brad Winters and Kristian Smoke.

In the 2nd Bandit feature on Frenchie’s Chevrolet night Blaze Benedict and Stuart Mossow came to the green flag with Benedict grabbing the number 1 spot. Coming off turn 4 Benedict lost control of his machine, hitting the wall and rolling over just past the flag stand. Benedict was shaken up but able to walk away.  Kyle Bouvier had made his way to the lead by lap 6 and survived several challenges from Owen White and Derek Colbert along with a late race caution flag to score his first career feature win. White took 2nd, Colbert 3rd, Andy Fish and Corey Castell completed the top 5.

The DIRTCar 358 Modifieds took center stage for the 22nd running of the Memorial Cup and the first leg of the Frenchie’s Chevrolet American Revolution Series. 50 laps was the issue and 2009 track champion Roy Tarbell along with Perry Francis shared the front row with Francis taking command in the early going. It took 13 laps for the first caution to come out as Matt Billings who was running 3rd broke his front end in turn 2. On the restart Francis held onto the top spot with John Lazore who came from 10th up to 2nd Todd Stone, Tarbell and Chris Raabe who had charged from 17th starting position. On lap 15 Lazore grabbed the lead with Francis, Raabe, Stone and Tarbell making up the top 5. Caution came out on lap 16 as Casey Swamp slammed the turn 4 wall, he was uninjured. On lap 23 Todd Stewart broke a front end and hit the wall in turn 4 bringing out the yellow. With the race going caution free for the next 15 laps Lazore, Francis and Raabe put on an incredible show for the fans as they traded the top 3 positions numerous times and lapping several cars in the process. Tim O’Brien lost a motor on the front stretch on lap 39 bunching the field up for the next restart. Lazore still held the lead when some great heads up driving occurred on lap 43. Perry Francis made a run to the outside of Chris Raabe going down the back stretch when suddenly Francis ran out of race track and came within feet of hitting the end of the pit wall in turn 3, he would head behind the pit wall, come back to the track and amazingly remain on the lead lap. On lap 47 Raabe and Lazore were racing hard for the top spot. Coming off turn 4 the 2 drivers made contact forcing John Lazore into the wall and ending his evening. The 2008 358 Modified champion was not injured but the car was heavily damaged. On the final restart Raabe held off several challenges from veteran Todd Stone to take his 2nd straight win and first Memorial Cup title, Perry Francis, Roy Tarbell and Carey Terrance rounded out the top 5.

The 2nd DIRTcar Sportsman 20 lap event saw Dylan Evoy take the lead from outside pole sitter Tom Benedict. Sheldon Hoogwerf’s bid for his second win of the night was taken away in turn 2 as he was forced pit side with front end troubles. Evoy held the top spot at the halfway point with Brandon Hagan, Travis Back, Tom Benedict and Dillon Sallows completing the top 5. Kristian Smoke lost control of his machine in turn 2 bringing out the yellow on lap 11. 4 laps later Brad Winters would also have similar issues and bring out the caution once again.  Once the green flag flew for the final restart Evoy built up a comfortable lead on Travis Back and cruised to his 2nd career DIRTcar Sportsman win at MIR. Ronnie Tyo, Tom Benedict and Mike Arquiett completed the top 5.

The DIRTcar Pro Stocks took to the speedway for their 2nd feature of the night with outside pole sitter and reigning Mr. DIRTcar Series champion Louie Jackson getting the lead over David Papineau. On lap 7 Ricky Thompson lost the handle in turn 4 and spun which forced early leader Jackson and Roch Aubin into the outside wall. Thompson was able to return to action while Jackson and Aubin were out of the event. The next restart saw David Papineau hold the top spot with Dave Bissonette 2nd and Ricky Thompson now running in the 3rd spot. Thompson grabbed the lead away from Papineau and started to pull away. With one lap remaining Papineau’s great run came to an end as he broke while running second and headed to the pits. Thompson scored his 2nd win of the night followed by Bissonette, Jody Swamp, Dion Oakes and Preston Mossow.

This coming Friday night 101.5 The FOX and Harley Davidson present the 2nd 20 lap feature from May 20th for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds along with a regular 25 lap event. DIRTcar Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks and the first round of the CKON 97.3 FM Bandit Series. The green flag drops at 7:45 pm.

CTCC’s first 2011 Webisode features Alex Healy

The Castrol Canadian Touring Car Championship is pleased to announce that the first Webisode of the season is now online on our YouTube Channel and on our official Website.

Even though last year's Webisode series was a huge success, the President of CTCC, John Bondar decided to make some changes to the concept and take it to a different level. "This year, our Webisode series will be much more focused and much more in dept. Our goal is to present what truly reflects the passion of CTCC competitors", says Bondar.

Webisode 1 profiles Alex Healy of Alex Healy Racing. Last Season, Alex and his family made the decision to sign up with one of the most competitive teams in Canada, Lombardi Honda Racing, with the hope of competing for the Championship. It was a tough year for Healy as he was caught up and overwhelmed with the media attention around the team!

"Sitting in the big yellow Civic, under the big black tent with crew everywhere, media everywhere, I let it get to my head a bit. But this year, definitely much more humble and definitely determined to do really well this season", declares Healy.

To find out more about his story, watch the first Webisode by logging on to the CTCC YouTube Channel at www.youtube.com/user/canadiantouringcar or on the Website's home page at www.touringcar.ca

Audi Prepares Insane 503HP A1 Clubsport Quattro for Worthersee Fest,

Every year, fans of the Volkswagen Group get together at the Wörthersee festival, held in Reifnitz, Austria, to share their passion about cars. The show is so big that the VW Group’s brands spare no money to develop dedicated one-off models for the event. Audi’s star attraction at this year’s Worthersee Tour (June 1 to 4, 2011), which celebrates its 30th anniversary, is the ludicrous A1 clubsport Quattro.

The one-off show car is a rally-inspired A1 hatch that uses a heavily modified version of the 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine found in the TT RS and the RS3 Sportback. The five-pot normally produces 340-horsepower and 450 Nm (331.90 lb-ft), but thanks to the systematic tuning of the turbocharger, intercooler, induction tract and the exhaust, output has been boosted to 503-horsepower and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft) of torque.

London Mayor to Whack President Obama’s Motorcade with the Congestion Charge

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past week or so, you’d have seen that hi-larious [sic] video of one of the Barack-mobiles getting stuck on a ramp outside the U.S. Embassy in Ireland. The U.S. President’s eight ton, “Beasts” are monsters of cars, built to withstand bullets, bombs and probably reporters’ shoes (yes, I went there).

In a cute footnote to this story, notorious car-hater environmentally-conscious London Mayor Boris Johnson is considering levying a congestion charge on each car in President Obama’s motorcade, the cost of which would be £10 (US$16) per vehicle. A spokeswoman has stated that they will not be paying the charges if billed.

Not too long ago, we brought you official design images of the brand new 2012 Mercedes-Benz A-Class sporting a five-door hatchback body styled after the impressive A-Class concept seen at the New York and Shanghai Auto Shows in April. Now we have some revealing spy shots of the upcoming 2012 B-Class minivan. Being that the next A-Class and its larger B-Class sibling belong to the same family, you would expect a similar design philosophy between the two models.

However, as these latest scoops demonstrate, that is not the case with the new 2012 B-Class. We had a very hard time telling the differences between the current B-Class and its successor, as the overall shape and styling of the small MPV have been kept intact. Nevertheless, the new B-Class is slightly taller and longer than the current model, with the front and rear ends influenced by the latest crop of Mercedes-Benz cars and SUVs.

Study Says Men Seven Times more Stressed than Women in Traffic Jams

A new research by satellite navigation company TomTom reveals that men’s stress levels rise seven times higher than a women's when stuck in heavy traffic. British psychologists reached this conclusion after testing volunteers for the rise in stress chemicals in their saliva when caught up in a traffic jam.

The study found that women's stress levels increased by 8.7 percent, while men's soared to 60 percent in the same traffic jam scenario. According to UK specialists, this could prove unhealthy as it puts pressure on the heart and causes dizziness and breathing problems. However, many of the volunteers had no idea they were experiencing stress. 67 percent of the women and 50 percent of men said they did not feel any stress after 20 minutes in heavy traffic, even though the readings showed otherwise.

New Nissan Leaf Commercial Mocks the Chevy Volt for Using Gasoline

Electric carmakers are trying hard to promote their products, with the environmentally friendly nature of these vehicles being their most exploited feature in advertising. Nissan is going down the same path with a new campaign for the fully-electric Leaf entitled “Gas Powered Everything”, in which the company mocks the internal combustion engine by imagining a strange world where all appliances run on gas.

The result is a funny commercial in which people have to put up with gas-powered alarm-clocks, microwave ovens, computers and many more appliances. Even the Chevrolet Volt becomes a subject of joke for being a gas-electric hybrid. But we can't help but wonder: isn't Nissan's approach a little hypocritical? It's not like their range includes electric cars alone...

Lapcevich scores well-deserved top-10 in NASCAR Canadian Tire Series opener Saturday; Grimsby racer overcomes adversity at Mosport to finish eighth

May 29, 2011, GRIMSBY, ON – Jeff Lapcevich opened the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series at Mosport Speedway with an eighth place finish Saturday night. The Grimsby, Ontario, racer got spun late in the race, but he still managed to come back for an eighth place finish in his Tim Hortons-sponsored Dodge Challenger.
“I’m excited about the way our season started,” said Lapcevich. “The car was as comfortable as I’ve ever had it at Mosport. We got behind during the long stretch of green flag racing, but while other drivers were slowing down we seemed to get faster.”
Lapcevich debuted his family-owned Fastline Motorsports Dodge program along with new crew chief Tim Ellas this weekend.
“Tim has done a great job in the short time he’s been with us,” said Lapcevich. “He’s a proven winner, and our communication this weekend was great. If things had gone a little differently we had a top five car.”
Lapcevich broke into the top-10 early in the Dickies 200, but when the event ran more than 100 laps without a caution he found himself a lap down to eventual race winner Scott Steckly. Things got worse for the Grimsby veteran when he got spun out in turn three. No caution flag was thrown for the spin, and Lapcevich was able to resume without losing another lap.
A few late restarts allowed Lapcevich the opportunity to advance a few spots, and in the end he brought the car home eighth unscathed.
“The big positive we can take from the race is the car is pretty much ready for Delaware Speedway in a couple of weeks,” said Lapcevich. “We’ll run the road course car next weekend in Quebec, and it’s reassuring that we only have to do routine maintenance to be ready for Delaware.”

NCATS - HATHAWAY PERSEVERES IN DICKIES 200

May 29, 2011- Bowmanville, Ontario-  Amidst troubles with his #3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge, NCTS driver Jason Hathaway persevered to bring home a hard fought 6th place finish in the Dickies 200 presented by Vortex Brake Pads at Mosport Speedway on Saturday night.

The first event of the season got underway yesterday for the Ed Hakonson Racing/Team 3 Red race team with the season opened at Mosport International Raceway.  During practice the team adjusted on a loose handling race car and made final preparations for the 200 lap race.  Hathaway posted his best ever Mosport qualifying effort during his 2 lap qualifying session with a 6th place starting spot.

Trouble started early in the 200 lap main event for Hathaway when he reported a miss in the engine to the team’s Crew Chief Craig Masters.  A long green flag run did not allow Hathaway to bring his race machine to the attention of his crew until lap 113 after being under powered and going 2 laps down to the leaders, including team mate Don Thomson Jr.

After falling back to 13th place with an ailing race car, Hathaway was given a boost by his pit crew with a quick pit stop for right side tries and fuel. Fresh rubber helped Hathaway and he made his way up to the 11th running position.

With only 20 laps to go Hathaway was the recipient of the Lucky Dog Award and earned his way back onto the lead lap.  Hathaway made his way through traffic up into the top 10 and into 7th place.  A green white, checkered finish gave Hathaway one last chance at gaining more track position and he did just that, avoiding a last lap tangle coming home in 6th place.

Hathaway was excited by their finish to what started out as a tough race. “I am really happy with our finish today.”  Said Hathaway.  “The guys did awesome in the pits and Craig made some great calls on the car set up and adjustments. Our team mate Don Thomson Jr is on the podium tonight in 3rd place so this is a great way to open the season.”

“I’m really impressed with the way Jason dug deep and rallied with the engine problems he had tonight. To come all the way back up to the front when he was deep in the running order with only 20 laps to go was awesome.” Said Team owner Ed Hakonson

The next race for the #3 Snap-on Tools/Rockstar Energy Drink/Vortex Brake Pads Dodge will be their inaugural appearance at the Circuit ICAR located in Mirabel, Quebec, north of Montreal, Sunday June 5.  The teams will take to the 3.4 kilometre road course on Friday afternoon for testing, Saturday for qualifying and main event on Sunday afternoon.  The Dickies 200 with be broadcast on TSN on June 4 at 1 pm.

Ed Hakonson Racing is proud to be partnered with Snap-on Tools, Rockstar Energy Drinks, Vortex Brake Pads, Napoleon Grills, Castrol, Fast Eddie Racewear, Choko Motorsports, Praxair and Cathcart Trucking.

NCATS - THOMSON PODIUMS IN FIRST RACE WITH ED HAKONSON RACING

May 29, 2011- Bowmanville, Ontario- New stable mate to Jason Hathaway under the Ed Hakonson Racing banner, Don Thomson Jr, took to the ½ mile oval at Mosport Speedway and reward his team with a well run 3rd place finish.

After joining the Ed Hakonson Racing team in January, Thomson was looking forward to getting on track for the first race of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tries Series season. The newly formed team qualified in the 9th place starting spot for the Dickies 200 Presented by Vortex Brake Pads.

It did not take long for Thomson to find his proven rhythm in his #8 Farmers Feed Families Dodge on the track as we worked his way through the pack up into the top 5.  That was where he stayed with the exception of stopping for fuel and tires just after the half way point.

A late race tangle on the track under a green, white, checkered finish and some awesome driving helped Thomson to secure a 3rd place finish.

Thomson was very proud of the teams’ first outing. “The car was pretty good tonight and we had a great battle up front to win this race.  I want to thank my crew and the Hakonson family for giving me a chance to come to the track with great equipment and the support of a great group at E.H.R. I saw my team mate Hathaway was having motor troubles, but I’m so impressed that he battled back to a 6th place finish.  What a night for E.H.R.”

The next race for the #8  Farmers Feed Families Dodge will be their inaugural appearance at Circuit ICAR located in Mirabel, Quebec, north of Montreal, Sunday June 5.  The teams will take to the newly added 3.4 kilometre road course on Friday afternoon for testing, Saturday for qualifying and main event on Sunday afternoon.

The Dickies 200 will air on TSN on June 4, 2011 at 1 pm.

NCATS - Mathews Turns Heads at Mosport

May 29, 2011.  The 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire season opener took place this past weekend at Mosport Speedway near Bowmanville, Ontario.  The driver that drew plenty of attention was New Liskeard, Ontario’s Steve Mathews.  The #15 Mathews Motorsports Ford was fast right from the start of practice and Mathews continues to impress every time he takes to the race track.

The #15 Mathews Motorsports Ford was the car everyone was chasing during practice and Mathews showed great speed and maturity.  He ran plenty of laps to get comfortable in the seat but didn’t abuse the car.  “It felt so good to get behind the wheel of the car for the first time this season” said Mathews.  “I just knew we’d run well and couldn’t wait to get started.

Mathews backed up his notable practice speeds by qualifying the #15 Mathews Motorsports Ford third for the 200 lap feature event.  Mathews wouldn’t remain in third position for very long.  Right after an early caution period the race was restarted and Mathews powered his way to the front of the field and took over the race lead on lap eleven.

Maintaining a comfortable pace Mathews had no difficulty staying at the front of the field.  “I wasn’t pushing the car at all” said Mathews.  “I was setting the pace and it felt great to get out and lead some laps early on” he added.

During a long green flag run and the #15 Mathews Motorsports Ford would relinquish the lead and the half mile track that batters brakes would also hamper Mathews.  “Because we went green for over 100 laps the brakes were heating up and I just didn’t have a chance to get them cooled down” explained the driver.  “That put us back a bit in traffic and it got a little messy after that” he added.

Instead of being out front and in control of circumstances, Mathews and the #15 Mathews Motorsports Ford was back in the field and would become tangled with another competitor.  The contact would knock the alignment of the front end out and eliminate any chance of Mathews regaining the lead.

Steve Mathews would continue to fight for every position the rest of the way.  #15 Mathews Motorsports Ford would finish the race in tenth position.  “It’s a bit frustrating and I’m not in the best of moods right now talking about it” said Mathews after the race.  “But I guess to be fastest in practice, qualify third and lead a lot of laps is positive.  I know we’ll be just as strong at the next oval race at Delaware, I run really well at that track.  First though we’re going to race at Circuit ICAR.  Our team built a new road course car this winter and we’re looking forward to that event” he stated.

Steve Mathews and Mathews Motorsports will participate in the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series which features twelve events from coast to coast in Canada.  All races can be seen on TSN.  You can follow the progress of Steve Mathews by logging onto the new website www.stevemathews.ca

VÄTH’s €32,670 Tune Lifts Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe to 615HP

The star of the Mercedes-Benz range, the SLS AMG Coupe, has only a year under its belt but the V8-powered supercar has gained a lot of love from the tuning industry in the past 12 months. The newest performance and styling package for the ‘Gullwing door’ supercar to hit the tuning stage comes from Germany’s VÄTH with the introduction of the V63S kit.

The company’s first priority was to squeeze some more juice from the SLS AMG Coupe’s 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine through the use of a software upgrade and an in-house high-performance exhaust system that also allows drivers to adjust the tone of the eight-cylinder unit.

NCATS - Micks Finishes Just Outside Top Ten at Mosport

BOWMANVILLE , ON, Sunday May 29, 2011: Kerry Micks driver of the Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging Ford Fusion started the Dickies 200 in seventh place. The No. 02 had mechanical problems right from the drop of the green flag, but was still in contention for a podium finish before the last restart when Micks was taken out. When all was said and done Micks wound-up 13th.

The No. 02 team was quick early on in practice and held onto the top spot on the chart for the first half, however Micks fell to the fifth position when practise wrapped up. In qualifying the No. 02 Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging Ford Fusion turned a time of 21.962 which earned Micks the seventh qualifying position.

Micks Started the Dickies 200 on the inside of row four and when the green flag dropped he settled into the seventh spot. By lap 18 Micks had moved up to the fourth position and was challenging for third. However, the No.02 Ford Fusion was beginning to have brake problems. “The brakes were not right from the very beginning of the race” commented Micks, “But we didn’t have any early cautions so I just kept driving the car the way it was”.

The Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging Ford Fusion was running in fourth on lap 120 when the first caution came out.  Micks came in and took right side tires, it was a quick stop and he was the third car off pit road. The No. 02 team opted to come back in under the same caution and top up on fuel, as did most other teams. Both pit stops for the No. 02 team were flawless and after taking fuel Micks was the first car to exit pit road taking over the lead.

Micks had a great re-start and got out to the front of the pack and held onto the lead for six laps.  However, Micks was having further mechanical problems as the power steering had also been fading throughout the race.  With the brakes and power steering failing Micks couldn’t maintain the lead and slipped back to fourth.

Micks was still handling the car well and was even gaining on the third place car.  However, a caution came out on lap 171 and Micks, who was struggling with the car on restarts, slipped back to sixth.

As the race was nearing completion, there was another caution on lap 186 and under that caution Micks came on the radio and informed his crew that he had no power steering left.  On the restart the No. 02 was spun in turn four and the race was under caution for the fifth time.  Micks came down pit road to survey the damage and change the right front tire; however, the spindle was broken and with only 6 laps remaining in the Dickies 200 Mick’s night would end.

The Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging team finished the night with a 13th place finish.  Micks was disappointed with the results, but after the race was in high spirits as he is looking forward to the next oval track. “The car is so fast” Micks said with a smile at the end of the race “I think it’s the fastest car I’ve ever had and good things will happen. I was still able to drive the car and pick up track position with little brakes and power steering” Micks added.

The Dickies 200 will air on TSN on Saturday, June 4, at 1 p.m. ET.

The next stop for Micks and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will be the inaugural visit to Circuit ICAR in Quebec, and don’t forget to go to Dickies.ca before the race and make your picks for the Race to Win Challenge for a chance to win some great prizes.

Canadian Rally Championship: Fifth Consecutive Canadian Win for Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard

Fifth Consecutive Canadian Win for Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard - Calgary (Alberta), May 30 2011.- Quebec driver Antoine L’Estage (of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) and his co-driver Nathalie Richard (of Halifax, NS) won this past weekend’s Rocky Mountain Rally, the second round of the 2011 Canadian Rally Championship amidst extreme weather conditions in the Kananaskis region of Alberta.  This marks their fifth consecutive victory in the series, after having won the last three events in the 2010 season and the first round of 2011 earlier this year.

The Rocky Mountain Rally definitely lived up to its reputation of having challenging weather conditions.  This year, in addition to rain and mud, the competitors were faced with persistent snowstorms covering the high altitude competitive stages with up to a foot a snow.  This paved the way for a showdown between championship rivals Rockstar Royal Group in the Mitsubishi Evo X and the Subaru Canada factory team. « It was really a great battle ! We won more than half of the competitive stages even though we were handicapped by being first on the road for the entire duration of the rally, forcing us to plow the sometimes deep snow for the cars behind us.  We had to make sure we avoided even the slightest error to remain amongst the leaders, especially during Friday morning’s stages » comments Antoine L'Estage.

At the wheel of their Evo X, Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard kept the pressure on their rival for several stages before taking over the lead on the penultimate stage. « I pushed to my maximum, especially on the last two stages.  I’m very proud of this win because when a battle is this tight, anything can happen.  Our car was once again perfectly reliable.  We claimed the rally win with a five second lead and not even the slightest scratch on the Evo X. It’s a big victory for our entire team and it puts us in a good position in the championship » adds the Quebec driver. This victory is one that will remain etched in the Rockstar Royal Group duo’s memory.  Coming out on top after a tight battle where neither team suffers from mechanical problems is a memory to hold onto – this is the second time the team has enjoyed this experience in 2011.

For the duration of the rally, Antoine and Nathalie used the Yokohama A031’s, particularly suited for the mud and the best possible choice for Friday’s conditions, explains the reigning champion : « it really helped us to have the Yokohama A031’s available to us, we need to have confidence in our tires in order to constantly drive at the limit and succeed at the top and we have that with our Yokohamas ».

This victory, the Rockstar Royal Group’s fourth win at the Rocky Mountain Rally, increases the team’s lead at the top of the championship standings, as well as at the top of the fight for the North America Rally Cup. « We have a small but passionate team and we all work very hard so this kind of success is the fruit of our labour.  John Buffum and our mechanics do a great job and of course my co-driver Nathalie Richard was once again perfect in these difficult conditions. » adds Antoine L'Estage.

The Rallye Baie-des-Chaleurs, the third round of the Canadian Rally Championship, will take place in Quebec on the first weekend of July. Before that, however, the Rockstar Royal Group team will contest next round of the Rally America championship in Pennsylvania.  The STPR rally will be held in just a few days (June 3rd and 4th).  Reigning STPR winners, Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard hope to use this event to increase their lead in the North American Rally Cup and to jump to the front of the hunt for the Rally America title.

Antoine L’Estage holds three North American championship titles (2007, 2008 and 2010), three Canadian titles (2006, 2007 and 2010), one American title (2010), and twenty-eight overall victories in Canada and the US. Nathalie Richard holds six overall national championship titles (3 in Canada and 3 in the USA), as well as thirty-four overall rally wins on both sides of the border. She is also a six-time North American Co-Driving Champion (2004 – 2010, excluding 2006).

Antoine L’Estage and Nathalie Richard participate in the 2011 Rally America and Canadian Rally Championships with the support of Rockstar Energy Drink, Royal Group, Yokohama Tires, Mitsubishi Canada, Drenth Motorsport Gearboxes, Garrett Turbos, Énergie Cardio, Libra Racing, Driver's Edge Autosport (OMP), VP Racing Fuels,  Exe-Tc Suspensions and Hawk Performance Brake Pads. It’s a Wrap: CFC’s Artsy Volkswagen New Beetle Convertible

The soon-to-be-replaced VW New Beetle Convertible has caught the attention of Bavarian foil specialist Car Film Components (CFC), which has revealed a rather artsy-looking tuning proposal. The highlight of the tune is of course the exterior with certain parts of the body including the doors, side panels, hood and bonnet covered in a velvet black wrap while the front and rear bumpers, the wheel arches and the rocker panels are draped in a sticker like motif. The pice for materials and labor is €2,200 or about US$3,140. Read more »

CRC | Rocky Mountain Rally Results

ANTOINE L'ESTAGE WINS TIGHT BATTLE AT SUBARU CALGARY ROCKY MOUNTAIN RALLY - Morley, ALBERTA, MAY 27, 2011 – Antoine L'Estage (Ste-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) and Nathalie Richard (Halifax) won the Subaru Calgary Rocky Mountain Rally, their second event of the 2011 Canadian Rally Championship. L'Estage and Richard triumphed after a day-long battle with the rival Subaru Rally Team Canada pairing of Pat Richard (Squamish, BC) and Leanne Junnila (Calgary). The Rocky Mountain Rally is Canada's highest altitude rally and unpredictable weather played a key role in this year's edition.

Organizers were immediately challenged by overnight snowfall that made sections of the rally route impassible. Volunteers worked feverishly to create a new schedule, and the rally started after a three hour delay.

L'Estage and Richard were first on the road, which meant they would be sweeping the loose gravel and snow from the road surface, making the road faster for the teams behind. Teams completed four passes of the Cox Hill stage before heading to service, where L'Estage hoped for a reseed to put someone else first on the road.

“It was really tough this morning, very bad to be first on the road,” said L'Estage. “In the time where we turned around to do the next stage, the road covered over in snow, so again I had to clear the road.”

Pat Richard struggled as well with the slippery conditions. Running Yokohama mud tires, Richard was confident that they were the correct choice – the same tires chosen by L'Estage.

“In the snowy sections, it's so slippery that you really have to stay on the line and stay clean,” said Richard. “It's tough because the camber of the road is so severe that the car will slide sideways down into a corner even if you go slow.”

Benefitting from L'Estage's road sweeping, Richard moved into the lead, and maintained a small margin heading into service. Teams made repairs and the cars were sent back out to complete two more passes on the Cox Hill stage before heading to the final three stages at the Jumping Pound Forest Demonstration Loop. With no reseed, L'Estage would have to continue first on the road, clearing the worst of the road conditions.

Leo Urlichich (Toronto) and Martin Brady (Meath, Ireland) moved into a secure third place after a fast start.

“We beat Antoine on the first stage, which shouldn't happen,” laughed Urlichich, who had chosen a deep snow tire that allowed him to push harder in the sloppiest conditions. “Of course, after that, he destroyed me on every stage.”

The two wheel drive cars found the conditions particularly grueling, often struggling for grip. Jan and Jody Zedril (Winnipeg) lost control and slid off the road, losing almost 40 minutes before continuing. Zebe Szewczyk (Calgary) and Shabir Haji (Calgary) also struggled, spinning at high speed and losing time as well. This opened the door for Eric Grochowski (Calgary) and Keith Morison (Calgary) in their VW Golf to take the lead in 2WD.

“I think we're leading 2WD by about a minute,” said Grochowski. “It's great, but we still have a few stages to go, and anything can happen.”

On the first pass on the Jumping Pound stage, Richard and Junnila hydroplaned at a watersplash and hit a signpost, damaging the right rear corner of the car, and costing 5 seconds of their 8.8 second lead. The next stage, they lost another 5.9 seconds, giving up the lead for the first time in the rally, with just one stage to go. Both Richard and L'Estage drove at the limit over the final stage. L'Estage was again faster, winning the event by 5.3 seconds.

“The tension in the last few stages was super high,” said L'Estage after the rally. “Today had some really tough conditions, and it feels really good to fight from behind for the win, and of course to take it!”

“Antoine was definitely quicker after service,” said Richard. “When we got to the Jumping Pound stage, we had some confusion with our notes and the location of the watersplash, and damaged the car. It's tough, but it is good to know that we're competitive and can lead and win a rally.”

Urlichich was satisfied with his result, a comfortable third place.

“We stuck exactly to the plan,” said Leo. “I wanted to continue to learn, and for that of course you need to stay on the road. I've had a lot of changes to the car, the notes, and have a new co-driver, so there's plenty to learn.”

Grochowski and Morison won 2WD, though the pair had concerns over whether they would make the finish.

“We were using an old clutch and it started to slip on the final transit, so we're happy to finish,” said Grochowski.

Szewczyk finished second in 2WD, with Jeremy Foster and Chris Kremer finishing third.

Morison also served as the event organizer, but handed over control of the event for the day so he could compete.

“I've worked with a really strong team of volunteers on this, and they were good enough to let me take today off to race. Everyone did a great job,” said Morison.

“We had a lot of challenges today, but everyone did their job,” said Clerk of the Course, Peter Hill, after conditions proved so difficult that a completely new schedule had to be created. “Once we saw what we had to work with, we were able to put a plan together to run the rally.”

The 2011 season continues July 1-2, at the Rallye Baie Des Chaleurs, in New Richmond, Quebec. Featuring the largest fan attendance of the series, the event is characterized by some of the fastest roads in the series.

The Canadian Rally Championship is comprised of six events held nationwide in a season that extends from February to November. The series is presented by Subaru Canada, supported by Yokohama Tire Canada and features contingency programs from Subaru Canada and Mitsubishi Canada. The Canadian Association of Rallysport (CARS) is the official sanctioning body for rallying in Canada.

Rally is often described simply as “real cars, real roads, real fast.” The all-season motorsport sees drivers and their co-drivers take modified road cars to the limit as they achieve blistering speeds over closed-road courses that typically cover more than 150 kilometers of gravel, dirt or snow covered roads. Fans can get up close to the cars in the service areas and catch all the action from specially designated spectator points located at the best spots on the route.

Full coverage of the championship will air on RDS and TSN. Check local listings.
