FRASERVILLE, ON - Throughout its first 10 years of operation and into the second decade of racing, Kawartha Speedway has placed a strong emphasis on its regular divisions. While other tracks rely on touring series to build a solid base of fan support, the 3/8th miler at Fraserville, Ontario has always put the focus on their home track drivers and teams. Each year, competitors in the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks, Better Carpet Thunder Cars and NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models take on some of the best names in the racing game in extra distance events on one of the country’s premiere motorsports facilities.
The 2011 campaign started Friday, June 3rd with a fast paced show that also included the OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Models. Following a one week break, action returns to Kawartha Friday, June 17th as a 100 lap invitational feature for the late model division – 1 of 3 extra distance events for the class this year – headlines a regular night of racing. Opening night winner Kyle Donaldson – who earned a limited late model track championship in 2007 and added a thunder car crown to his resume in 2009 – hopes to be able to pick-up a second late model checkered flag. The Queensville, Ontario speedster is anxious to run his first 100 lapper in track’s headline division.
“Depending on your racing luck, the longer shows can either be a lot of fun or a major headache,” said Donaldson. “Anytime you’re running a feature race that’s 4 times longer than what you usually do, you need to make sure your team has prepared you for anything that could happen. There needs to be enough fuel for the full 100 laps. That means taking yellows into consideration. And you need to make sure you can adjust the car or your driving style as the fuel burns off and the tires start to lose their grip. There are so many things that can happen.”
The opening night features treated fans to 3 and 4 wide racing throughout the pack, with as many as 5 different drivers contesting the top spot each event. The edge of your seat action thrilled the standing room only crowd from the drop of the green flag and track officials hope that momentum continues throughout the year. Gates open at 3:00 Friday, June 17th with practice starting at 5:00 and the first green flag at 7:00.
