LONDON, ON - Kerry Micks driver of the Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging Ford Fusion was eighth quickest in practise and turned the eighth fastest time in qualifying. Micks fought the car throughout the night, but held on for hard fought sixth place.
In practice Micks was posting times that were towards the top of the charts and the team made some adjustments, including changing shocks, to see if they could get increase their speed.
In qualifying Micks made his way around Delaware speedway in a time of 19.708 which was good enough for eight place and the No. 02 started the Keystone Light 200 on the outside of row four.
At the drop of the green flag, Micks quickly fell into line in seventh place and was being continuously challenged by the eighth place contender. Micks was able to hold him off until the first caution came out at lap 57.
The strategy for the No. 02 Dickies/Beyond Digital Imaging team was to come to pit road on the first caution and quickly top up on fuel, which they did. The team had a quick stop and got back on the track in seventh place and maintained his position until lap 102 when the next caution came out. Micks then came back to pit road to make some further adjustments to the car, as he was fighting a brake issue.
The track had little grip on the outside grove so it was difficult to make a pass and for the next 40 laps it was single file. The next caution came out at lap 151 and the leaders all made their way to pit road to take tires. Micks took right sides and the No. 02 team made a quick, clean stop and was the third car off pit road, but since four of the leaders had already taken their tires and stayed out, Micks would again restart seventh.
Over the next 40 laps Micks was really fighting the car, he had very little brake pedal and did everything he could to pull off a good finish. Micks even made up one spot and finished the Keystone Light 200 in sixth place.
“The car was fast, but having no brakes made it hard to run up front. I actually had to pump the pedal on the straightaways to build up pressure in the brakes so that I could slow down in the corners. I knew I just had to keep digging and fight for a solid finish. We’ll take sixth and be ready to contend at road course at Mosport.”
This weekend’s events at Delaware Speedway will air on TSN on Sunday June 26 at 1 p.m. ET.
The next stop for Micks and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will be will be in two weeks’ time at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario.
