CASCAR teams have saddled up their horsepower, equipment and haulers and are headed west for events at Vernon, B.C.’s Sun Valley Speedway this weekend (July 15-16) before backtracking to Alberta for a special appearance at the CHAMP Car World Series Weekend (July 21-23) in Edmonton.
Brantford’s Doug Brown is among the strong contingent of Ontario drivers who is making the trek to face the challenges of CASCAR’s Western Series teams during the two-week tour.
The driver of the NAPA Autopro/Haldex Monte Carlo currently sits third in the National standings trailing Cambridge youngster JR Fitzpatrick by 29 points and second-place Scott Steckly of Milverton by 21 in the tightening points battle.
The veteran competitor is coming off a solid fourth-place finish at Barrie on Canada Day but has three strong and experienced veterans to ward off with Mount Albert’s Kerry Micks, Wyoming’s Dave Whitlock and defending Series Champion, Don Thomson, Jr. within 8 points of third place.
Even with his strongest seasonal start since turning his racing attentions full time to CASCAR Super Series, Doug continues to approach each event with the same philosophy he adopted before the season began.
“We started this season planning for and running one event at a time,” he reiterated when asked about the grueling schedule he and a few of his teammates face in the weeks ahead, especially the western trip. “We had a pretty good run at Sun Valley last year and it’s definitely one of the nicest tracks on the circuit, but Edmonton is a new venue for us so we’ll just have to see how well we can do in qualify and take it one lap at a time,” he added.
After their western tour, teams will be returning home for a brief respite before gearing up for another road course challenge, this time at the fabled three-day Grand Prix des Trois Rivieres on Canada’s Civic Holiday weekend.
CASCAR’s Super Series returns to the Ontario scene on August 12 at Mosport’s half-mile oval.
