HAMILTON, ON – Next Wednesday (July 19), Lucas Oil Flamboro Speedway will play host to a rare Wednesday night racing program. The focal point of the evening will be a 100-lap, $3,000-to-win Late Model race, to be called ‘The Ron Williams Memorial’, in tribute to the popular racer who passed away last year.
The program will also include a 40-lap Thunder Car race and a special free draw for the kids, through will several great prizes will be awarded to youngsters in attendance. They include: 6 bikes, a scanner & headset (courtesy of Glen Watson from Race2way.ca), and Bingeman Park Water Park passes.
The bikes were donated by Ron’s family and friends, including: Jeff Stewart, Bruce Bennett Jr. and Team; Jason Shaw and Team; Pete, Sharon, Petey and Angie Shepherd; Rob and Yvonne Neely (Neely's Auto Service); Cole Weber (Weber Leasing); Ron & Diane Strauss (RJ Trucks); Process Group; Glen Watson and Family (Race2way.ca); Ron & Audrey Snyder (Ron's Service); Alfred Fach Excavating and John Wolff (Wolff's Service Centre).
This event was organized by John Casale of Lucas Oil Flamboro Speedway, with help from Sharon Shepherd and Bruce Bennett. The kids’ draw is organized by Wendy Watson and Randy Shaw.
The Back Gate opens on Wednesday (July 19) at 5:30 p.m. and the Spectator Gates open at 6:00 p.m. Racing is slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
A Brief Background on Ron Williams:
Started racing in 1964 at tracks such as Nilestown and Hideaway. In the early ‘70s, he raced with drivers such as Bernie Campbell, John Logel, Jim Collison and Ken McIlroy at various track such as Delaware, Varney, Flamboro and Sauble.In the late ‘70s, he raced in the Late Model division at Sauble and Flamboro, with drivers like Bill Zardo, Jr. Hanley, Don Biederman, Randy Slack and Pete Bennett.
In the early ‘80s, Ron retired from racing and went to work for Bruce Bennett at Sauble Speedway as their Pit Steward. He also helped out in the pits at Varney Speedway.
In the early ‘90s, he was the crew chief for Robbie Thompson's ACT car, was on John Gaunt’s CASCAR pit crew, as well as for other drivers such as John Wolff and Tim Ellis.
At the start of this millennium, Ron joined BBJA - Bruce Bennett Jr. and Associates - and for three years was the crew chief of the #56 Late Model driven by Jeff Stewart at Flamboro Speedway.
