September 4, 2006. CASCAR Super Series race teams had to wait an extra day due to due rain before taking to the 5/8 mile track at Cayuga Speedway for round number nine. The condensed schedule and limited practice time would hurt the final results.
Cathcart and the MidAmerica Motorsports team were hopeful of a strong finish at their home track after battling with mechanical issues last weekend. “The car felt pretty good at first” said the driver “and we focused on the set up for the race” After passing open wheel racing sensation Patrick Carpentier in the 50 lap heat race Cathcart would line up on the inside of row eight for the feature.
“As soon as the green flag dropped I knew we had some issues” said the MidAmerica Motorsports driver. “Usually a car tightens up as the sun goes down and the temperature drops but we were big time loose”. The team decided and early pit stop was necessary for handling adjustments.
As the laps ticked away Cathcart continued to struggle with the loose race car. “We probably should have also run a different gear in the car” he stated afterwards. “If we’d run a little more in practice I think that would have been the decision we made, these are long straight-aways and you’ve got to make the right choice, unfortunately we made the wrong call”.
Even with all the difficulties encountered during the race, Cathcart would bring the car home only dropping one position on the night. “I’ve got to thank the guys for working to try and help me as much as they did” said Cathcart. “They really had to chase it tonight and I appreciate it. We’ll use the time now to get ready for the final race of the season at Kawartha in a couple of weeks. I like that track a lot and the team does too.”
