June 12, 2010. David Thorndyke and the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com team worked extremely hard during the long off season to prepare for their opening race in the 2010 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series on the road course at Mosport International Raceway. The team had acquired a new “spec” motor for their first event of the season. Sadly mechanical difficulties would end their on track participation even before the race began.
It was a difficult day right from the beginning for the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com group as they were forced to miss the first of two practice sessions due to delays in the NASCAR inspection process. “At the first race of the season NASCAR always goes over the cars very thoroughly” said Crew Chief Adam Thorndyke “and it just took a bit longer than expected so we missed the session” he added.
Once driver David Thorndyke was able to get the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com Chevrolet on the track he began slowly and wanted to gradually improve his lap times around the challenging road course. Regrettably he barely had the chance to get settled in. “After only a handful of laps I heard this grinding noise and then the rear end locked up and I went around off the track” he concluded.
The #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com car was returned to the team transporter where the crew began to diagnose the problem. “At first I thought we might have broken an axle but that wasn’t it. The oil pan was full but there were metal shavings in the pan and that means it’s a terminal problem” said Thorndyke. “We might have spun a bearing but won’t know for sure until we take the motor apart, but we are finished for this weekend” he said dejectedly.
This is a truly disappointing turn of events for the #67 Thorsons Enclosed Vehicle Transportation/iRacing.com team after all their hard work in the off season. “We picked up a “spec” motor and the whole team worked so hard to get ready for this first race, it’s just really disappointing” said the driver. “All we can do is get to the root of the problem and then look to our next scheduled race at the Toronto Indy” he concluded.
David Thorndyke and the EVT/iRacing.com Chevrolet team are next scheduled to race during the Toronto Indy weekend July 18th.
