BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada - Rain at Mosport International Raceway brought NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 qualifying for the Vortex Brake Pads 200 to a halt on Saturday.
Two groups of cars of 13 cars each were set to qualify - NASCAR road racing style – Saturday afternoon at the 2.459-mile road course. The first group was able to complete its session and Peter Klutt recorded the fastest lap at 86.377 seconds. Trevor Seibert was second-fastest at 87.694 seconds.
Toward the end of the first session rain, which had been problematic throughout the day, began to fall in the area and the track became too slick to send out the second group, which includes previous Mosport pole winners Andrew Ranger and Scott Steckly.
Sunday’s schedule will now be modified as the second group will get its shot to qualifying in advance of the Vortex Brake Pads 200 and will take the track at 9:25 a.m. ET.
Steckly and Ranger both look to be serious contenders for the pole based on results from practice earlier in the day on Saturday. Steckly posted a fast lap of 84.282 seconds and Ranger came in at 84.471. They were followed on the speed chart by JR Fitzpatrick (84.537), Jeff Lapcevich (84.918) and Kerry Micks (85.101).
All five were under the previous track qualifying record of 85.119 seconds set by Ranger in 2009.
The Vortex Brake Pads 200 still is set to take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. ET Sunday.
