Hoogwerf pulls a rabbit out of his hat in closing laps at Brockville Ontario Speedway

BROCKVILLE-Popular veteran driver Sheldon Hoogwerf pulled a rabbit out of his hat on Saturday night for his first feature win of the season in the Sportsman division at Brockville Ontario Speedway.

Hoogwerf was running a distant second to Dylan Envoy with three laps to go in the 25 lap feature when a caution flag flew that brought the one opportunity the Prescott pilot had been waiting for. Hoogwerf noticed that the local teenager was drifting a little high in turns 3 and 4 at the Beast of the East and hatched his plan.

Hoogwerf dove down underneath the 83 coming off turn number four just after the restart and grabbed the top spot and then held off a late challenge from Chris Herbison for his first win of the season. Evoy had to settle for third after leading much of the way. Mike Mainse andRandy Earl rounded out the fast five.

The Ontario DIRT Late Models made their only visit of the season to the BOS with Pennslyvania's David Scott picking up the lead around the midway point of the 30 lap feature and sailing into the distance for the victory. The race was red flagged twice for multi car pileups going into turn 1, the second of which completely blocked the track. No onewas injured but there were some angry drivers headed back to the pit area afterward. Early leader Andrew Rheaume was second followed by defending series champ Greg Oakes, Chad Valone and former Brockville regular Peter Mantha.

The Street Stocks ran a special invitational event Saturday night, bringing in cars from across Ontario, Quebec and New York State. Cornwall's Eli Gilbert and Pembroke's Todd Raabe swapped spots from the first invitational early in the season with Gilbert taking the win this time.

This event also was red flagged after Bruno Boivin and Nick Gauvreau touched in turn 4 seconding Gauvreau into the air and into the catch fence knocking out one of the light standards. Gauvreau walked away uninjured. Kevin Jodoin recovered from an early race caution tofinish third in front of Peter Raabe and Kevin Fetterly.

Teammates Chris Lloyd and Dwight Feltham started up front and stayed clean for the entire 16 lap distance with Lloyd winning the Rookie feature event by a car length over his buddy. Cory Barnes ripped through the field for third with Mike Gaucher and Jean Marc Larosefourth and fifth respectively. The Vintage cars returned to action with John Gibson holding off a late charge from Cole Dingwall for his first win of the year. John McNamee, Brian Comeau and Steve Arthbuthnot made up the rest of the top five.

Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday night, July 31st for a full race program plus the Vintage cars. The green flag drops at 7 pm.
