FRASERVILLE, ON - It’s no big secret. If you offer a short track stock car driver a big cheque at the end of the night, they’ll race you for it. Kawartha Speedway fans will be treated to the season’s hottest show with the 7th annual Summer Sizzler – Friday, July 9th. The 150 lap show for the track’s NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models and special guests will be run in a trio of 50 lap segments and pay a hefty $3000.00 to the overall winner.
2007 track champion Larry Jackson has to be considered an early favourite heading into the showcase start. After taking a brief hiatus, the Oakville, Ontario veteran is back in action for 2010. Following a pair of starts in 2009, the professional firefighter has combined forces with Mississauga’s Bruce Rankin for a renewed assault on Kawartha’s headline division.
“I was a bit off my game for the first few weeks,” said Jackson with a smile. “It was tough to find my marks on the track and to get into my usual rhythm out there. I knew I hadn’t forgotten how to drive, so I just needed to settle-down a bit and stop thinking about things too much. That’s when things started to fall into place the way I’m used to having them.”
After 3 events on the track’s 10th Anniversary schedule, Jackson’s #84J sits second in the late model standings, 5 behind Dan McHattie – but just 3 markers ahead of opening night winner Chris Morrow. The top 10 runners in the division are separated by just 73 heading into the big event.
To make things interesting for the fans and drivers alike, the show will be run with a heads-up format – meaning that the winner of the first qualifying heat will earn the inside front-row starting spot for the first 50 lapper. From there, each segment will have a complete inversion and use a point system similar to golf. The segments will pay points based on finishing positions – with the winner earning 1 point, the runner-up 2, third place 3 points and so on through the field. The driver with the lowest overall point total will be declared the winner.
To handle the extra racing expected, the track will open at 2:00 with the first green flag at 6:00 Friday, July 9th. The Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks and Better Carpet Thunder Cars will also be part of the show. Fans can get all the Summer Sizzler details at www.kawarthaspeedway.com.
Kawartha regulars will also be pleased to know that the track’s new permanent grandstands will be in place starting this weekend.
